Diner's comment: The old restuarant has been refurbished and it really looks nice now and the soup and sandwiches we had were great. Best to make reservations.

Diner's Comments:
This is really a gem of a place. They are a bit
pricy for lunch, but the gyros are great, as are most things on the menu.
I think there is a kind of sampler plate, which you can specify 3 or 4
items for 10 or 11 bucks. Reasonably efficient, no nonsense service.

Magoo's
Puck's Alley
Diner's Comments:
This place thinks of itself as a pizza parlor. The
former pizza parlor that occupied that spot, Mama Mia's, was shut down
because the cooks were dealing drugs out of the kitchen. The clientele
has become much less scary since the ...ahem... change in management, but
the pizza has gotten worse. The redeeming feature of Magoo's is $5 pitchers
of reasonable beer.

Jack-in-the-Box
Corner of King and McCully
Healthy recommendation: Chicken Teriyaki bowl $3.99. Excellent low fat rating
by State Health Dept. survey of fast food (this item only, nothing else on the menu is low fat).
Diner's Comments:
The service in any of the Honolulu franchises seems to be quite a bit
slower than in other fast food operations. However, their menu is
unbeatable, and at least the McCully and Beretania store is open until
1:00 AM. My least favorite item is the fish and chips combo, due to
excessive grease. My favorite is really a toss-up between the Sourdough
Jack and the Ultimate/Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger. Remember, that
burger was never meant for elves....

Thai Cuisine
Diner's Comments:
Some people swear by Keo's, but my heart belongs to this place when it
comes to Thai food. The prices are moderate, the sticky rice is great,
and most of the entrees are well worth the 7-8 bucks you'll fork over
for them. In particular, anything with "evil" in the title and any of
the "pad thai" dishes are excellent.
